In the local indigenous Guugu Yimithirr language the name for the Cooktown region is Gangaar.
Gangaar means "(The place of the) Rock Crystals."
Quartz crystals are/were used in various Aboriginal ceremonies across the continent and are found locally.
The crystals from the Cooktown region are known to have been traded at least as far as Mossman in the south (about 300 kilometres or 190 miles),
and probably even further. Wabalumbaal is the name of the Endeavour River in the Guugu Yimithirr language.
